kRO Dev Team Interview - 4/17/07

1. Server Renewal / Optimization

Dev team has announced that they are doing everything they can to fix the lag within Ragnarok Online, and as such, they plan to do whole renewal of how game server works.

They described how it works by saying, the game lag is because of the server programs and how it interacts with the client. This will be fixed, they say, by reprogramming parts of the client and server applications.

2. System Renewal

They said they will try to balance the ‘minor’ jobs and ‘major’ jobs. Unfortunately, we were unable to hear anything about exactly what they plan to change. We can assume that Gravity does see this as a problem and wishes to fix them.

Variety of ways which to progress with the quest. Also, moving NPCs, quest window system, book reading system will come together, focusing on scenario-oriented progression of quests.

They showed a development version of RO screenshot of quest progression window, which showed how many monsters should be killed, brief storyline of the quest, and progression of the quest itself. With moving NPCs, the progression of quests will significantly differ from how it is currently.

Defense calculation change - Not a nerf. Right now, if your DEF is 100, incoming damage will be 0. This will be changed. One of the changes is that, if your VIT is 110, your resistance vs. status ailments will not be same as VIT 100.

They stressed that this is not a nerf, but did not signify which.

What will be required to change to the 3rd class is not yet decided, but players will not have to go back to Novice after job changing this time. The concept will be focusing on giving “Specialization Point” to each classes, causing classes to be more stronger in that particular state. For example, a 3rd class from Swordsman line might have Specialization Point in STR and VIT, making them more effective with those stats than any other classes.

Also, when you change into 3rd class, all skills will have its own unique casting animation. In addition, there will be equipment / skill proficiency rating. Because players will be able to go beyond LV 99, the stat calculation are being changed, most likely.

3. Instanced Dungeon

This system means, whenever you enter, map will be changed randomly, and it can be enjoyed by solo players, party, or even a whole guild. Designed with high level players in mind.

These dungeons will focus on past scenarios, for example, Holgrenn’s Past - know what exactly is the refinement success rate of Holgrenn. They will have rewards - equipments that cannot be dropped or traded, and some EXP.

4. User Convenience System

A new separate Battle Message window will appear, to make chat window less confusing with all the battle-related messages, chatting messages, and announcement messages appearing all at once in same window.

A world map will be provided, allowing you to see where your party / guild members are in the entire world of Ragnarok.

5. Sakray Server Operation Change

Sakray server players will no longer have to make their own characters. Players can now talk to a certain NPC to copy their characters directly from any of the main servers to Sakray server.

Therefore, it will make it much easier to test new content by allowing people to copy their main characters to the Sakray server. There might be some restrictions, like some items cannot be used, but they said they didn’t decide exactly what the restriction will be. Most likely, this is to prevent trading of certain items.

6. Episode 12.1

This scenario will cover the relation of 3 kingdoms, but especially focusing on the conflicts between Rune-Midgats and Arunafeltz. There will be a scenario relating to the Schwartzwald bio lab experimentations.

* Rebirth of the Devil King, Morroc (Breaking of the Time)

World will be impacted depending on the outcome of the battle with the Devil King, like the god-level quest.

A large story that will happen across 3 months, and this happens only once. This means, depending on who beats the Devil King Morroc and when it happens, time will break apart, and this will have noticeable impact in RO scenario progression.

7. New Siege Mode - War of the Kingdoms

Guilds will belong to a kingdom, and will participate in variety of events, with many guilds presented as single team from the particular kingdom they belong to.

It will have a goal to achieve. It will be different from normal siege mode. Also, rewards will differ depending on what needs to be achieved.

Specific Q&A Section:

They noted players often asked very specific questions, causing dev team to appear somewhat agitated. Also, when the guilds came together to take a picture, they noticed only -1- person came from Sakray server.

About the bots

Dev team said they are trying to find a sure-fire way to block them. Currently nothing they can do can fix it.

They did say they will get to it, and wait for the solution to come.

2-3 classes or 3rd classes

Update for it will come sometime in 2008. Not yet known what will be required to change to those jobs.

Auction houses / mailbox

A user asked if it can be just removed, but dev team answered it will be improved and re-released during renewal patches.
